Happy New Year! January 2, 2022
Hello hello! Thank you for reading the inaugural installment of this newsletter.
I’m starting up this project partly because Paper Cat Press announced its retirement and mostly because I want a place to jot down the occasional long-form thought, or to share an interesting link, or to feel connected with a handful of people outside the maelstrom of Discord and Twitter. I’m primarily a translator and editor of Japanese media, so everything I write about is going to be related to those areas in some way or another. For those of you who came here hoping for something more like Paper Cat, I apologize; you won’t quite find that here, but I hope you benefit if you choose to stay. If you’re just here for the job listings or the dog pics, please feel free to scroll right on down to the clearly labeled sections. I won’t mind, and there are a couple of dog pics along the way too.
I spent the first few hours of 2022 sick and in bed. I only knew we’d gotten into the new year because of the fireworks going off at midnight on the dot (and the string of ambulance sirens just thirty seconds later). While I didn’t start this year on a strong note, Charm did when she slipped through the front door today in order to challenge me to a game of catch-me-if-you-can. And catch her, my husband did. Luckily, she wasn’t in a cone of shame wandering the dairy lands of Wisconsin this time around.
I’m happy to say I was booked up in 2021, and I hope I won’t be booked out for 2022. By that, I mean I’d bought too many books throughout the year—though I could very easily be talking about work.
My husband and I moved from our small apartment in the city into a much bigger (and less expensive) house that I’ve been happily filling with as many manga, novels, and reference books as I can fit.
Since we’ve maximized our wall-to-wall space, we’re finally dealing with the overflow situation by upgrading to DIY floor-to-ceiling shelving—more on that later! (We hope!)
Also on the docket for next year will be classes: I’m taking a Copyediting for Fiction class soon and an Intro to Lettering Comics class later in the year. Both pricey, but hopefully both worthwhile. If you’re in either, please give me a wave. I always appreciate a study buddy.
